Week 5 Self-Critique

"Purple Greek Pot"
-Junhao Wang
Self-Critique
1. Description

  • It is a Greek/Roman inspired pot that was painted.
  • It is painted in black and "purple", and is decorated by three runners on each side.
2. Analysis
  • Elements of Art Found- line (questionable), form, color, texture
    • Color- the pot itself is colored.
    • Form- the pot has a 3D shape.
    • Texture- the pot has a rough texture.
  • Principles of Design Found- pattern, contrast, balance, harmony, movement
    • Pattern- there is a geometric pattern of a line and three runners.
    • Contrast- the white plate contrasts the dark pot.
    • Balance- the pot is centered in the image, tilted to the side for asymmetry
    • Harmony- pattern and balance create a sense of harmony in the pot.
    • Movement- the figures on the pot imply movement, the tilt may provide even more of that sense.
3. Interpretation
  • The pot is very dark in color, but not in feel.  The subject matter represented is not inherently dark, and so, the work doesn't seem to have much impact or feel.
4. Evaluation
  • A pot was made that takes from the Greek or Roman style.
  • The pottery work itself is not very impressive-cracks and uneven spots are apparent all over the work.
  • The use of color was a mistake on my part-an attempt to mix brown and red to create the colors that can be found in Greek or Roman pots became a purple!
  • The pot's shape is not so appealing, the asymmetry here is not welcome.
  • It was a good try.

Week 3 Self-Critique

"Toy Ziggurat"
-Junhao Wang
Self-Critique
1. Description

  • It's a simple ziggurat in an open, dessert space.
  • The ziggurat is earth-colored, and has little bits of decoration and coloring.
2. Analysis
  • Elements of Art Found- line, space, color, shape
    • Color-the work has employed the use of color.
  • Principles of Design Found- emphasis, balance, scale, pattern
    • Scale-perspective was used to create a sense of proportion and scale
    • Balance- the ziggurat is placed in the center of the work.
    • Emphasis- some portions of the ziggurat are colored differently for emphasis.
    • Pattern- a repetitive pattern is found at the botom of the ziggurat.
3. Interpretation
  • The colors used and the simple design give me the impression of the toy.  Once again, not a dramatic work-maybe a little silly in some eyes.
4. Evaluation
  • A ziggurat was drawn that takes from Mesopotamian architecture.
  • The use of perspective in the work is done well.
  • The coloring and use of color is not very nice-it doesn't look smooth or appealing.
  • The patterns drawn on the ziggurat do not look very "realistic".

Week 2 Self-Critique

"Afternoon Mug"
-Junhao Wang
Self-Critique
1. Description

  • It's a lighter colored mug on a reflective surface.
  • The light source seems to come from behind the mug.
2. Analysis
  • Elements of Art Found- line, space, shape, value
    • Value- different values were used to give the impression of a 3D object
  • Principles of Design Found- contrast, emphasis, "balance"
    • Contrast-a darker reflection is used to contrast the light mug
    • Emphasis-our eyes are drawn to the center of the work
    • Balance-the centered mug balances the work
3. Interpretation
  • Gives me the impression of lightness, not a very dramatic work.
4. Evaluation
  • The shape of the mug itself is odd-it doesn't follow perspective well.
  • The mug's rim doesn't really help the mug look 3D, or real.
  • The handle's shadows are not very convincing.
  • The shadow itself could have transitioned to white better.
  • Values are not very smooth-they don't blend well.
  • Shadows and reflection appear to be the right size.
  • I believe the values in the work are correctly done (placement of dark and lightness).

Wow, First Post!

Hi I'm Junhao Wang.  I'm currently 15 years old, live in Sandy, and this is my first year at UTVA. There isn't much special about me, but at least I enjoy the arts (that's why I'm in this class haha).

Here are some paintings I like:
"Among the Sierra Nevada Mountains"
-Bierstadt
"Jardin a Sainte-Adresse"
-Monet
I like other periods and artists too, but these two periods are close to my heart.

I like music too!  I do classical music, but other stuff is cool too.
